Sustainability
Prosperity
We seek to strengthen economies where we operate through our local hiring, investments in our operations and infrastructure, and contributions to non-profit organizations that help communities thrive and that promote inclusive social development.

Prosperity represents our industry-leading innovation and operational capabilities to create shared value, including investments in local workforce development and energy-related, resilient infrastructure and technologies. By measuring and reporting on aspects of prosperity and equity more holistically, Oxy and our stakeholders can become better informed and prepared to sustain the assets, infrastructure and human capital that contribute to value creation and the Sustainable Development Goals today and that will be necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals for a low-carbon future.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND STAKEHOLDER INCLUSION
Community and Social Investments
Oxy prioritizes strengthening local economies and helping communities thrive. Our numerous partnerships address community needs, create economic opportunity and promote social development. We actively engage key stakeholders to better understand their interests and concerns, which helps us identify social investment opportunities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we focused charitable contributions on local food banks to aid community members who lost jobs or were under-employed. We distributed packages of personal protective equipment, including gloves, masks and hand sanitizers, to local hospitals and charities and to employees to take home to their families. We also encouraged our workforce to obtain the vaccine, and directly assisted foreign government agencies to obtain and distribute vaccines to our workforce and their family members in countries where we operate.
Contributing to the Economy
Every year, Oxy pays billions of dollars in supply chain contracts, taxes and royalties, benefitting economies across the globe.
Oxy’s Supply Chain team maximizes our use of vendors based in the countries where we operate to increase job creation and economic opportunities for local residents. In 2020, Oxy managed nearly $8 billion gross in payments to approximately 13,000 vendors and contractors who supplied goods and services to support our global operations and infrastructure.
In 2020, Oxy paid approximately $1.6 billion in U.S. federal, state and local property, sales and severance taxes, out of a total of approximately $2.17 billion paid in taxes globally.
Oxy has more than 50,000 royalty owners in the United States. In 2020, Oxy paid more than $500 million in royalties to U.S. federal and state governments. The same year, Oxy paid more than $1 billion in royalties to U.S. private mineral owners.
Community Investment in the U.S.
Our community investment approach in the U.S. focuses on six main areas: public health and safety, education, social services such as food security, military and veterans, environment, and arts and culture.
